13 players have fallen at this year’s Wimbledon but what is
the real reason players are falling on the grass surface?
Well, there is no real answer. There is no proof as to why
players are falling at Wimbledon. Players, coaches and grounds men have come up
with 4 ideas. Some believe it’s just an
accident, top profile players including Jo Wilfried Tsonga have said they
didn’t think the court had anything wrong with it. Others believe the court is too slippery but
the head grounds men for Wimbledon Neil Stubley stated he had never seen the
courts in better condition for playing tennis.
Andy Murray’s coach said that players were falling because when they go
for a shot in the corner of the court they don’t keep their feet together
causing then to fall when they move the other way. He said Andy Murray who has
not fallen at Wimbledon so far keeps his feet close together enabling him to
move quicker and subsequently not fall.
There has been a suggestion that the balls have been moderated which may
mean that the players may not be used to the pace of the ball and may fall when
changing direction.
Whatever the reason for players falling over it can’t be an
accident because there has never been a grand slam where the courts have caused
such controversy. At the four grand slams last year only 15 players fell
overall, so perhaps it has got something to do with the quality of the courts.
Anyway this Wimbledon is certainly turning out to be a much
talked about competition with all the court controversy and the defeat of so
many previous Wimbledon champions. At
least it’s looking good for Andy Murray!
